Restroom questions from Detroit organisers and site managers

Most questions fall into four groups: how many units a crowd or crew needs, what a city event permit asks for, what Michigan construction rules say, and where the waste goes.

  • Standard, ADA and flushable trailer units
  • Festival weekends, race circuits and parade routes downtown
  • Freeway crews, tower sites and inner-ring renovations

Topic 1

Counting units

How many units does a crowd of several thousand need?

There is no single ratio that applies everywhere. The count depends on the crowd, the hours, the heat and how much food and drink is sold. Tell the operator those details and it will set the number for your site.

Do I need an accessible unit?

Usually yes at a public event. The federal guidance for events suggests a share of accessible units, and the operator will advise on the number and placement for your site.

Topic 2

Permits and events

Does a Detroit event need a permit for restrooms?

Many do. The City of Detroit requires a special-event application with department sign-off and council approval, and the application asks for a site plan showing where restroom units will stand.

Do park events need a site plan?

Larger ones do. A site plan showing toilets and their access route is normally asked for, so bring the layout to the operator early.

Topic 3

Construction and waste

How many toilets does a Michigan construction crew need?

Michigan's construction rules set the number by the count of workers on site. The rule has been summarised in a legislative analysis, so check the current text with the state before you set the count.

Where does the waste go?

Waste is pumped by a licensed septage hauler under Michigan's Part 117 rules. Ask the operator for its septage licence numbers and check them on the state's Septage Haulers Directory.
